COOK HOUSE
WHY
Initially the client intended to renovate the large existing 1970’s home to bring connection between living spaces and make better use of the floor space. The existing home had ample space but spanned across cumbersome extensions from prior decades. Outdated fixtures, fittings and windows were also in need of update.
HOW
Multiple studies were done, firstly looking at the potential of renovating the existing home without disrupting the existing building envelope, followed by options for a new extension to improve the layout. A cost analysis of the options was undertaken by a builder, and their feedback led to a knockdown-rebuild being cost effective while eliminating the inherent compromises that the existing house posed to the design and the energy efficiency. The new knockdown-rebuild navigates the reasonable slope within a gently pitched roof. The new home is shielded from the street by an integrated recycled brick courtyard wall. Internally, the living spaces and kitchen open to the north backyard. Raked ceilings bring drama to living areas, and timber floors bring warmth throughout.
