THE CROSSING
WHY
An empty site with prime position between Newcastle’s town centre and harbour was purchased by the DOMA Group for a mixed-use re-development. The resulting building consists of a ground floor public verandah with cafe and restaurants, a two level carparking podium above, and four apartment towers connected by an open breezeway. The four towers are angled to capture views and sunlight. The arrangements of the towers give each apartment a sense of identity, seclusion and private outlook. Masonry is featured throughout, punctuated by concrete slab edges and upturns, and indented and staggered patterns in the brickwork.
HOW
The original design and development application was undertaken by CHROFI architects. Subsequent design modifications, detailed resolution, services co-ordination, development application amendments, construction documentation and design verification statements were undertaken by de Rome Architects and Dezignteam. The process required a strong technical understanding of the buildings components and the relationship to construction code requirements, planning regulations, and buildability challenges. Upholding the design intent through to the finest of details was key in the successful execution of this project.
