TURNER HOUSE

WHY

The existing site is an under-utilised 1288sqm block, close to the city. The existing dwelling on the site is a small 2 bedroom cottage style brick house. The intention was to make better use of the site without the default option to knockdown-rebuild one large house, but rather introduce additional housing options.

HOW

The Turner House is a compact 90sqm “secondary residence”. Flexibility of use is provided in the planning, allowing either a 2 bedroom house with a study or second living, or a compact 3 bedroom dwelling. The dwelling complies with the Adaptable Housing Standard to allow for future accessibility use. The built form provides articulation to the facade, with a simple gable roof over. A clerestorey window over the living creates spacious volume. The house is a mixture of recycled Canberra Red brick and lightweight cladding, to create a contemporary version of a simple cottage.
