ZIWA HOUSE

WHY

The existing dwelling is one half of an existing brick duplex from 1960. The dwelling is on a large inner north block amongst an established landscape. The clients saw value in retaining and renovating the iconic brick dwelling to reinvigorate the old internal, and adding a small extension to improve amenity.

HOW

The proposed extension comprises a garage, laundry and bathroom, housed in a subtle, low-lying form which does not compete with the street character of the existing brick duplex. From the backyard, the new building form sculpts out an external gathering space, with fireplace, covered area, and integrated seating. Internally, the existing ground level plan is modified to open up the living spaces. The existing upper level has minimal planning modification which reflects the enduring efficiency of the original planning.
